This paper presentation highlights the findings of a theoretical and practical study of the Behavior Intervention Support Team (BIST) model for schoolwide and classroom behavioral management. This presentation includes a discussion of BIST in terms of the current literature base and an overview of the directed observations and informal conversations with teachers and other education professionals in the research schools. The findings indicated that BIST as implemented in these schools was an exclusionary obedient behavior management model instead of a positive proactive model. It was also a set of practices that were seemingly not led by leading research or evidence based best practices.
