Abstract: In this paper I explore the various conceptions of in-depth interviewing, interrogate the relationship the interview creates, and examine the ethics of in-depth interviewing. Then, using the literature on therapy efficacy and training as a lens, I argue that we must re-conceptualize common understandings of what constitutes “effective” in-depth interviewing. I conclude with implications for training future researchers.
