Reading Like an Economist: A Multicase Study

Abstract

Disciplinary literacy is essential in understanding and studying subject area knowledge. The purpose of this multi-case study is to investigate economics reading approaches. This study includes individual interviews and expert think-aloud protocols, where participants read certain economic articles and reflect their ongoing thinking process in understanding and interpreting assigned texts. Open-ended interviews take place as well to further elicit expert reading strategies. The overarching question: How do economists read academic texts in their field? Sub-questions include: (a) What strategies do economists employ in reading economic journal articles? And (b) What characteristics define economic literacy?
