Abstract

In Los Angeles County the graduation rate from high school is reported to be between 65-69%. Many believe this is an inflated statistic and that actually many schools have an under-50% graduation rate. Many urban schools “Other” schools are beating the odds and providing rich academics, wrap-around services and a social justice school culture where students needs are meet and their success all but guaranteed. Both the Pilot School movement and the Charter school movement currently serve over 100,000 students and have created new school models for learning. The outcomes of two such models are worth examining as at the students are having success both academically and emotionally and are themselves developing a critical pedagogy that fosters a social justice culture, access, and equity.
