This presentation will report a formative experiment (Reinking & Bradley, 2008) conducted across three cases-ninth-, tenth-, and eleventh-grade English classrooms in a rural school district. Drawing on the perspective of multiliteracies (New London Group, 1996), the goal of this experiment was to improve students’ ability to write arguments-both conventional and digital. Using a retrospective analysis (Gravemeijer & Cobb, 2006), we will report pedagogical assertions from our data across multiple cases to guide instructional practice, especially as it relates to the rural context of each case presented.
