Teacher research is topical but the criterion practical usefulness is rather neglected. We present a theoretical framework to conceptually clarify practical usefulness with respect to decision making. We use the case of a classical language teacher Jane who conducted an excellent research project in her teacher education to make insightful what typically happens: decisions that are made in the context of a research project undermine practical usefulness of outcomes. We measure practical usefulness by establishing impact of her research on her heuristic goal system. A heuristic goal system represents how the multiple goals a teacher has direct design decisions about the planning of a lesson. We conclude with a discussion on broader implications of this study
