With the criticism around teacher preparation and push for attracting high quality candidates to the field, CAEP established standards for admission and selectivity allowing for the inclusion of non-cognitive skills. Adding a valid and reliable measure of non-cognitive variables for admissions purposes could serve the field well in meeting its goal for identifying the best prospective teacher candidates, while at the same time, not undermining the goal of greater diversity of the teaching force. This paper session describes results of Phase I of a larger three phase study to develop and validate an instrument for measuring prospective teachers’ non-cognitive skills; including an overview of the literature, the process for instrument development, the current version of the instrument.
