Negotiating Curriculum Policies and Practices Across Local and Global Educational Communities: Pursuing Educational Equity

Abstract

This paper draws from a qualitative investigation of a school on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten that was created to serve students who had experienced educational and other injustices in the broader society. It investigates the nature of the school’s curriculum, including its intersections with, as well as departures from, the curriculum policies and practices of the local, national, and global educational communities to which the school was connected. The paper’s broad implication for national school systems is an approach of knowledge to action that involves building professional collaborations across local and global educational communities so as to advance equity and achievement for all.
