Language Arts Classroom Practices and Early Adolescents' Needs: A Comparison of Student and Teacher Perceptions

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 7D

Abstract

This cross-sectional study investigates associations between student and teacher perceptions regarding classroom instructional practices utilized in the middle grades language arts classroom. Students and their teachers indicated the degree to which practices such as graphic organizers and while-class discussion support students' needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness, as well as their intrinsic motivation. Results of this study indicate few areas of convergence between the perceptions of these two groups in the classroom.
