Toward a Flexible and Equitable Bilingual Pedagogy: Emergent Bilinguals Engaging With Culturally Sustaining Biliterate Practices

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This case study shows ways in which a bilingual elementary teacher draws from different media to provide a flexible bilingual pedagogy by considering students’ interaction with multimodal texts in language arts and science/social studies. I focus particularly on the following question: What are the language practices that occur in a bilingual classroom when alternative modes of texts are introduced across content areas? Findings show that when the juxtaposition of texts happens, equitable linguistic practices are evident through translanguaging. The study provides documentation of ways bilingual teachers can incorporate non-linear strategies to juxtapose texts in bilingual classrooms across content areas facilitating the navigation of biliteracy practices, an important skill needed in our globalized world.
