This paper examines how scholars, since the 1970s, have reconstituted, recohered, and repurposed the work of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire within the context of Anglophone academia. From a critical discourse analysis perspective (Fairclough, 2001), this paper examines a corpus comprised of literature about Freire’s theories to gain insight into the specific discursive practices that scholars employ to represent and historicize his pedagogical ideas to English-speaking audiences. More specifically, this paper identifies and engages with the distinct cultures of indexicality that influence the uptake of Freire’s work outside its original Brazilian context.
