Impact of edTPA on Elementary Social Studies Teacher Education: A National Survey

Abstract

Via online surveys and follow-up interviews with elementary social studies teacher educators across the United States, this article explores how edTPA is shaping elementary social studies teacher education. The study found that elementary social studies teacher educators in the study viewed and responded to edTPA in differing ways. Despite the variance, however, they were proactively navigating edTPA in order to prepare future elementary teachers for meaningful social studies instruction. The study also found that without such proactive efforts, there may be a possibility of decline of social studies in elementary teacher education due to the high-stakes nature of edTPA and its focus on literacy and math content pedagogy.
