Unpacking Patriotism in an Elementary Social Studies Methods Class

Thu, April 27, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Building on the literature on patriotism and citizenship education, I developed, taught, and reflected on an elementary social studies methods course that aimed to unpack patriotism with preservice teachers. The goal was to assist future elementary school teachers to develop the concepts, approaches, and confidence to teach a democratic kind of patriotism and citizenship. Based on analysis of multiple data sources and my reflections, I discuss the importance of rethinking patriotism in elementary social studies teacher education.
