Investigating Summer Reading Achievement Through Curriculum-Based Measures Among Fourth-Grade Students

Abstract

A curriculum based measure, ISIP-AR was used to investigate the reading change of fourth grade students from the beginning of the summer to the beginning of the new school year by academic level. Scores examined include overall reading, comprehension, spelling, and vocabulary. Results suggested that students of all academic levels can experience reading losses during the summer months when not in school, implying that students need to practice their reading skills as reading losses can be realized at every academic level. Participants in this study were elementary school students (N = 118,478) from across the United States that completed fourth grade during the spring of 2014.
