Abstract

Much of the research conducted in the United States, related to creating schools in which children from high poverty, high minority backgrounds succeed, has been conducted at urban/suburban elementary and middle schools with only six percent of this research being conducted in rural areas. The purpose of this research was to garner stakeholders' perspectives of the reasons rural high schools with this type of student population, were successful in fostering high student achievement. The schools examined contexts. The study represents one of few to examine high performing rural schools at the high school level. Four elements; Student Focused Educators; Programs and Processes; Curriculum Delivery; and Administrative Leadership were identified as fostering student success.
