Abstract

The following paper details two studies that were conducted with the purpose of examining the association between elementary school start time and students’ academic achievement in mathematics and reading. The first study examined the association between elementary school start time and students’ academic achievement in elementary school. The second study examined the association between elementary school start time and students’ academic achievement later in middle school. The studies took place in a suburban school district in Minnesota. Students’ academic achievement was measured using the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments-III (MCA) in mathematics and reading. Overall, the results found no statistically significant effect of elementary school start time on students’ academic achievement in mathematics and reading in elementary school or middle school.
