Real Talk: The Influence of Intentional First-Year Programming on Student-Athletes' Cultural Competency (CQ)

Sat, April 29, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Student-athletes, a unique subset within the higher education student body, present distinct needs and challenges to identity and personal development during the first-year transition to college (Gayles & Hu, 2009). This qualitative study seeks to improve, understand and assess a formal first-year transition programming focused on the development of cultural competence (CQ) from the student-athlete voice. Framed by Chickering’s (1993) student development theory, this study seeks to understand how higher education practitioners can best support, on-board and engage underrepresented minority (URM) student-athletes during the transition to college during a time of distinct national focus on cultural competency.
