Dewey's Counternarrative to Neoliberalism

Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 217 C

Abstract

The arguments put forth in this proposal are not meant to say that neo-liberal critiques (Harvey, 2005) should cease or that the era of neo-liberalism is over. Rather, the thesis question derived from the teachings of John Dewey is that education researchers need to re-conceptualize neo-liberalism as it evolves as a dynamic antecedent to a new global and more diverse world, a world where educators remain responsible for educating ourselves, society, other educators, and youth around the world. That is, so long as we continue to accept and repeat, uncritically, neo-liberal critiques, we provide neo-liberalism with a transcendent status that no form of government or social situation actually has (Dewey, 1927/1954).
