"We Had to Check Our Dignity at the Door": Social-Emotional Learning in For-Profit International Travel

Sun, April 30, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

For many families, youth international travel is now seen as a mind opening, learning-rich experience. As a result of this cultural trend, many companies have developed programs designed to foster social-emotional and non-academic learning skills during international trips, such as intercultural competence and grit. This study uses socio-cultural theoretical perspectives to examine what students are actually learning based on 10 defined Student Learning Outcomes and examines incidental learning arising from international experiences. The study utilizes photo-cued reflection to engage with students about the learning they experience, as well as to assess the efficacy of learning outcomes defined by companies in the field.
