Understanding Habits of the Mind Among Diverse First-Year College Students

Abstract

Utilizing longitudinal survey data from the 2013 The Freshman Survey (TFS) from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) under UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) and institutional data obtained from a large, public university located in California, we completed a cross-sectional quantitative study to answer the research question: What factors predict habits of the mind among first-year students?. Results indicated typical predictors of college student outcomes are also predictors for the outcome for Habits of the Mind and complicating the unique experiences of students of color yields a more nuanced understanding of what predicts Habit of the Mind for low income and/or first generation racially and ethnically diverse college students.
