Abstract

Theory guides many of the decisions that are made during the life of a study. Whether a total system of theory, middle-range theory, or conceptual theory, theory is a tool that researchers use as an organizing principle. This paper presents a framework for professors of research methods to introduce the many uses and purposes of theory to better facilitate student learning of this complexity, thus putting knowledge to action.
