Taiwanese Students Transact With Postmodern Picture Books: What Is the Role of Culture?

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 2

Abstract

This is a qualitative study exploring how Taiwanese third and fourth graders transacted with six English postmodern picturebooks with Mandarin translations. Five female teachers and 127 students from five classrooms in three different elementary schools in Taiwan were participants of this study. Teachers and students participated in literacy practices, including read-alouds, book discussion, and writing reflections. Class discussion, written reflections, and teacher and student interviews were analyzed and showed that although students provided literary, analytical, linguistic, and personal responses to the picturebooks, critical responses were missing. Also, students’ comprehension of the picturebooks and in-class interactions among teachers and students affected student responses. The results revealed the concept of filial piety was influential to Taiwanese students’ ways of thinking and being.
