This paper sheds light on the culturally, socially, and historically shaped identities of teenage newcomers from Israel and India to Canada and the USA, respectively, by harnessing theories of identity formation. Findings suggest that Identity, agency, and action are not limited to the experience of the individual of learning
mathematics and EAL. Rather, they include the narrative of the social, historical and cultural
contexts. Focusing only on the experience of learning mathematics and EAL
without considering learners’ social, cultural, and historical perspectives is limited and limiting.
