Teacher Preparation Program Quality and Its Impact on Beginning Teacher Satisfaction and Resiliency

Fri, April 28, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Street Level, Stars at Night Ballroom 4

Abstract

Teacher attrition is especially high in early years on the job. When novice teachers leave their positions, it is costly to the districts employing them. More importantly, it is disruptive and potentially derailing to the careers of these beginning teachers. Teacher preparation programs have the important responsibility of preparing aspiring teachers for the demands and pressures they will face. Surveying new teachers about their satisfaction in their positions with regard to the quality of training they received prior to employment can yield useful feedback. Teacher preparation programs can use this data to strengthen their curriculum and learning experiences. This study found that novice teachers that rated their preparation programs highly are more likely to persist in the profession.
