This study reviews the term ‘school turnaround’ and its indicators, and identifies effective school leadership practices that proved to be successful in improving school conditions, teacher-related outcomes, and student learning (varied forms of school turnaround), especially in rural schools. These leadership practices constitute the framework to understand school leaders for school turnaround. Sources of evidence included in this review include published and unpublished research from major journals in the field of educational leadership obtained through the ProQuest data-base. The results of the study could offer constructive suggestions for school leaders to turnaround failing schools, especially those in rural areas, suggest directions for future research in this regard, and inform leadership preparation programs for developing school turnaround specialists.
