Abstract

This project explores the rise and fall of Claver College, a Black Catholic college established in Guthrie, Oklahoma in 1936. Specifically, the project examines 1) the efforts of Catholic religious to provide higher education opportunities for African Americans in Oklahoma; 2) the African American community’s reaction to the Black Catholic college; and 3) secular and religious resistance to the college.
