In this study we compared how discussion goals were accomplished during face-to-face (F2F) and online problem-centered discussions facilitated by the same co-instructors. An analysis of discussion transcripts suggests that despite different participation patterns across contexts, the instructors’ goals of social cohesion and sense making were equally met. Students’ coverage of the targeted problem space, however, indicated greater attention to “problem finding” by F2F students. We interpret results by considering how each context shaped both teacher-student interactions and learning outcomes.
