Given the increasing popularity of game-based learning and the growing importance of creativity, some researchers have been committed to developing educational games in hopes of promoting students’ creativity in schools. However, little is known regarding the positive impact of games on students’ skill development, especially on creativity. This study shows that among all the recent research that targeted creativity as a learning outcome, more than half of the studies used quantitative methods, and roughly two-thirds of the results were associated with medium to large effect sizes and suggested game-based learning might be a very promising approach to foster students’ creativity development. Additionally, most studies which reported large effect sizes employed design-based games rather than educational games or entertainment games.
