Private Tutoring and Students' Attitudes Toward School and Learning: Is It Aiding or Challenging Formal Schooling?

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Private tutoring is a wide-spread phenomenon which occurs in diverse countries that blurs the conceptual boundaries of public and private education. Since it goes along public education, it challenges the education system. The study asks: 1. Are there relations between participation in PT and students' attitudes toward school, teachers and their learning? 2. Are these relations different among high and low achievers? Based on a questionnaire administered to all students (n=855) of one school located in an affluent area in Israel (respond rate, 83.2%), it was found that PT mainly serves as a means of socio-psychological support - namely a learning security network- for low and high achievers that parents provide for their children, rather than challenging school
