How Professional Development and Professional Learning Communities Affect Teaching: A Large-Scale International Study

Thu, April 27, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of duration and type of professional development (PD) as well as professional learning community (PLCs) on teachers’ use of classroom teaching practices (CTPs). Using hierarchical linear models and sequential regression analysis, we examined the variation in teachers’ use of CTPs between middle schools in Turkey. In addition, we examined the effect of PD type, duration, and PLCs on teachers’ use of CTPs. We found that the differences in teachers’ use of CTPs were mostly due to factors at teacher level. Furthermore, PD type and PLCs were associated with CTPs, controlling for PD duration, teacher and classroom background variables.
