With the increased development and use of large-scale performance assessments, understanding how students engage with and perceive these assessments is essential. However, recent research on K-12 students’ perceptions of tests is limited. This proposal presents K-12 students’ self-reported effort and engagement on performance assessments designed to measure 21st century skills. The data include survey responses and scores from the College and Work Readiness Assessment (CWRA+), a performance assessment administered nationally to high school students, and from district-wide administrations of elementary and middle school performance assessments in a large school district in Virginia. Results of the study can inform district leaders, school administrators, and classroom teachers on the importance of using performance-based assessments as part of their programs.
