Investigating the Effect of an Adaptive Learning Intervention on Students' Learning

Fri, April 28, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Republic C

Abstract

Educators agree on the benefits of adaptive learning, but little evidence-based research is available currently. This study aims to investigate and understand the impact of an adaptive learning intervention in a pharmacy professional degree program. We examined students’ learning of biology, chemistry, math, and information literacy knowledge and skills important for success in the program and their experience using the system. The findings, using a mixed-methods design, showed the adaptive learning experience helped address the knowledge gap for chemistry, but the same effect was not observed for the other three content areas. The results revealed several design flaws that could have contributed to the lack of student success and highlighted the importance of design.
