This mixed-method study identified influences on parents’ portable technology adoption that impact their elementary-aged child learning to read at-home. The parent survey instrument received 120 responses. Clarifying interviews (n =13) followed. Analysis included descriptive statistics, multiple linear regression, and thematic analysis.
The regression model explained 64% of the variance in parents’ behavioral intention to adopt portable technology, influenced by social influence and attitude. Interviews confirmed survey responses and further revealed parents were influenced to help their child learn to read how they learned, parents’ performance expectancy improved when children read with portable technology, and portable technology required increased parent supervision. Implications seek to increase parental awareness of influences impacting how their child may be learning to read with portable technology.
