Creating Caregiver Connections: Perceptions and Impact of an Early Childhood Family Engagement Program

Abstract

The paper describes the implementation and impact of the United Way Born Learning Academy (UWBLA) program. A school based, family engagement program, UWBLA targets families of children from 0-5 years of age. Participants included 69 families and 10 program facilitators. Analysis of family and facilitator interviews and focus groups yielded several themes. Participants indicated that they changed their interactions with children, made connections with other families, and felt welcomed in schools. Suggested changes included continued classes for older children and increased frequency of sessions. Facilitators found the materials clear and easy to use. They emphasized the importance of building relationships and personalizing the program to the school. Challenges included attendance
