Countervisualities of Care: Visualizing Teachers' Care Work in Context

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This paper draws on data from a broader study, Visualizing value: Re-imaging teacher evaluation. The study explores the visual dynamics of teacher evaluation in neoliberal times, and how the resulting discourse is taken up and contested by radical educators. The author documents the multiple meanings of pedagogical images focused on teacher value and assessment, and considers the ways that teachers adapt, remix, and create images to make sense of their school experiences, challenge, and re-imagine multifaceted teacher identities and labor. The teachers’ images and narratives foreground their caring work, and present a model of teacher care that is interconnected, socially situated, and rooted in justice.
