By exploring the explicit and null content of teacher education scholarship, as articulated in the pages of the Journal of Teacher Education between 1950 and 1980, this work seeks to illuminate the symbolically violent response of teacher education scholarship to the Civil Rights and Gay Liberation Movements. Acknowledging that the scholarship of a profession provides insights into both its consciousness and conscience, reading deeply into how the field of teacher education first responded to the social change that occurred between 1950-1980 is then connected to calls to identify and question teacher education's contemporary stances on race, gender, and sexuality.
