Self-Regulated Learning Skills as the Predictors for Positive Perceptions of Online Minimester Learning Experiences

Abstract

Many institutions have adopted an online minimester model in which intensive classes are offered during the course of a normal semester to help students completing classes through accelerated instructions. Existent research has focused on comparing different instructional lengths and the findings are mixed. Specifically, minimester instructions are not conclusively superior or inferior to traditional 16-week instructions. We argued that research should focus on what and how to prepare students to succeed in accelerated online courses. This study examined whether self-regulated learning (SRL) skills could predict positive minimester learning experiences. The findings suggested that all six SRL skills were predictive. Therefore, educators should prepare students with relevant SRL skills prior to minimester instructions to ensure their positive online minimester learning experiences.
