Teacher Responsibility in an Age of Accountability: Elementary Teachers' Responsibility to Teach Social Studies

Fri, April 28, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 206 A

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of an interdisciplinary social studies content institute on elementary pre-service and in-service teachers’ sense of responsibility to teach social studies. Centering on responsibility, not accountability, this study builds on theories of rationale development and explores how a felt sense of responsibility to teach social studies is changed or reinforced after participation in a ten-day professional development institute meant to deepen social studies content knowledge and facilitate interdisciplinary teaching of social studies.
