Examining the Impact of edTPA on Practicing Teachers

Abstract

Currently 688 teacher preparation programs across 38 states require candidates to complete the teacher performance assessment edTPA. While much research has been conducted on pre-service candidate perceptions of edTPA (in surveys or interviews after recently completing edTPA), little research has examined practicing teacher perceptions of edTPA and if or how it impacts their current work in the classroom. This paper collects qualitative data from secondary mathematics teachers that attended a Mid-Atlantic University and completed edTPA as a program requirement. Candidates are interviewed twice - once for general descriptions of their current work and their perceptions of their program and a second time after re-examining their original edTPA work.
