Early Childhood Teachers of Mainstream English Language Learners: How Attitudes Shape Instruction

Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 2

Abstract

The purpose of this parallel mixed-methodology study was to understand, the perceptions of early childhood teachers towards their early childhood ELLs shape their pedagogical practices. Quantitative data was gathered through the administration of Pohan and Aguilar’s (2001) Professional beliefs about diversity 5-point Likert scale, which is comprised of items measuring diversity with respect to race, ethnicity, and linguistic diversity. Additionally, qualitative data was collected through interviews, classroom observations, and material artifacts.. Results indicated that the majority of teacher participants held negative perceptions towards the ELL pupils in their classrooms and that more work was needed in understanding the tenets of theories of second language acquisition and culturally responsive pedagogy.
