Theorizing Insurgent Sexual Knowledges and Practices: Lessons From Kinky, Queer, and Trans* Students

Sun, April 30, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 6C

Abstract

This paper explores the value of “insurgent knowledges” about sexual consent that are held within kink communities on college campuses. The study investigates the ways in which people of nonconforming gender and sexual orientations experience and negotiate consent in their interactions with prospective and actual sexual partners. The paper presents a theory-in-development of “insurgent knowledge” and “insurgent research” toward the study of sexual consent. The presented practices of overt rules of sexual consent within kink communities on college campuses contribute to a more complete understanding of consent. The research surfaces hopeful knowledge and approaches of value to reducing and/or eliminating incidents of unwanted and coerced sexual interactions.
