Abstract

Community Schools are a viable strategy for improving educational opportunities. This paper draws from a case study examining the conditions that facilitate family engagement at an elementary level community school in Eastern Pennsylvania. We utilize Eggers-Piérola’s (2005) Connections and Commitments Cultural Framework emphasizing five core areas: family, belonging, education, commitment, and taking action. Our qualitative data analysis yielded three thematic findings: a) a welcoming and comprehensive school community; b) a shared vision of educación fueled by collaboration for, and commitment to, children and families; and c) responsive leadership for capacity building and family strengthening. Understanding conditions that cultivate Latino family engagement contributes to the burgeoning scholarship about community schools. In closing, we discuss implications and recommendations for research and practice.
