Abstract

In this inquiry, we examine the initial implementation of a common reading program at a medium-sized comprehensive university, focusing on the critical issue of water. This theme is of high relevance as the region is in an historic drought, and many students are very aware of the importance of agriculture in the region and its dependence on water. Unlike many programs which are implemented as first year experiences, we engaged students from a variety of majors and levels, from freshmen to graduate students. Faculty facilitated innovative learning experiences connected to the readings, and students reported changes to their perceptions and behaviors about water use. We assert the need for common read experiences that are contextually relevant and connected to content.
