Practice to Research: Leveraging World Languages With Internationalization of a University Community

Abstract

This presentation reports on case study research investigating the multifaceted function of a University World Language Center (WLC) as a vehicle for culturally relevant pedagogy and the internationalization of higher education. The WLC was conceptualized by a group of international graduate students in 2013. The WLC expanded rapidly and currently offers 18 free language courses with 300 students registered each semester. Implications suggest that critical pedagogy can be adapted, expanded, and leveraged to meet the pressing need for a transformed world language community situated within a University striving for internationalization at home. Implications provided a model of culturally relevant language pedagogy for local and international students on a globalizing university campus.
