During the last decades, increasing drop-out rates for science-related university studies (Chen, 2013) have led research to investigate reasons for this drop-out and ways to support students’ academic performance.
In this regard, our study focuses on visual model comprehension as a predictor of academic success in chemistry and engineering and on the question, which individual learner prerequisites, on the other hand, can predict visual model comprehension.
First results of 262 students, who currently take part in a long-term study, indicate that figural and verbal reasoning as well as spatial ability are able to predict visual model comprehension and that visual model comprehension, in turn, relates to academic success significantly.
