What Is Ethics in Doctoral Supervision, and Does It Matter?

Abstract

The study aimed to both provide a tool for analyzing ethical issues in doctoral supervision, and to investigate how ethical issues in doctoral supervision are related to doctoral students’ experiences of their doctoral journey. More precisely, this study investigated the relationships between ethical issues in doctoral supervision and attrition intentions, productivity, satisfaction with supervision and doctoral studies, perceived career prospects, and experienced burnout. The participants were 236 doctoral students of behavioral sciences in two research intensive universities in Finland. The results show that students’ experiences of the ethical aspects of supervision were related to considerations of changing supervisor, attrition intentions, satisfaction with supervision and doctoral studies, and experiences of burnout.
