Speaking in Their Names: The Phenomenon of Urban Teacher Educator Effectiveness

Mon, May 1, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

The discussion of P-12 teacher effectiveness has seen a policy shift towards connecting the effectiveness of P-12 teachers to the university programs from which they emerge. The discussion of teacher, and teacher educator, effectiveness is problematic in its often singular conception of effectiveness despite increasingly contextual environments. This study focuses on the shared experiences of teacher educators with experience, service, and research in urban schools. Through their experiences, this study establishes essential challenges in preparing pre-service teachers who may enter urban schools. This study uncovers an urban learner-centered focus as a phenomenon present within the effective urban teacher educator. Recommendations are provided for multiple stakeholders to engage in contextual narratives of effectiveness in urban schools.
