Abstract

This paper tries to understand better the motives and processes in which particular educational model is exported—or lent—to abroad, drawing on the case of jugyo-kenkyu, a Japanese-origin professional development model known as lesson study. Based on the critical discourse analysis of 126 articles published in Japan, I found that jugyo-kenkyu came to be constructed as ‘the Japanese lesson study model’ and it has been evolved, reflexive of both political and economic agendas held by Japanese stakeholders and exposure to innovative lesson study practices abroad. These findings suggest existing theories of educational borrowing and lending need to be developed to capture the dynamic interplay between the motives held by the lenders and the reflexivity of a lent model.
