Separate and Unequal: Toward an Understanding of Inequality Among Students of Color in Segregated Schools

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

In this paper, I synthesize historical and sociological scholarship on school re-segregation with literature on the mechanisms of stratification within schools. I argue that we need to update the research on educational inequality in order to understand practices internal to segregated schools that produce disparities among students of color. I conclude by providing questions to drive future inquiry.
