Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the benefits and challenges of participating in large group instrumental adjudicated events in three Kansas high school music programs. Research questions included: How do experienced music teachers describe the benefits and challenges of large group adjudicated events. Data were collected from three information-rich music programs and multiple case study design examined the voices of experienced music teachers and building administrators. Selected findings include participants: (a) value having the opportunity to select adjudicated event locations; (b) identify utilitarian benefits as an outcome of attending adjudicated events; (c) identify multiple logistical challenges associated with preparing for and attending adjudicated events; and (d) identify musical considerations associated with attending large group adjudicated events.
